Third Grade Slice Article

Third graders are conquering division! We will begin exploring division by looking at how many are in each equal group. We’ll then look at division as repeated subtraction by looking at how many equal groups. We’ll write division stories and learn about remainders. Because the students know their multiplication tables so well, division is going to be a snap!

We will be finishing our Lewis and Clark puppets and performing our musical Lewis and Clark show. The students have been working hard learning the songs, researching their characters, and studying the expedition. This month we welcome special guest, David Saxon, a Lewis and Clark expert for an informative presentation and question and answer session. We will follow up Mr. Saxon’s presentation with a delicious Lewis and Clark feast featuring foods that they would have eaten on the trail.

The students are finishing up their current book group selections, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, Julie of the Wolves, or The Cricket in Times Square. We are working on group book reports that will be shared with the rest of the class.

In writing, we are working on character sketches. The students have chosen a character and are working hard to paint a picture, using words, for their reader. We will finish the year with our writing project called “Mona Lisa Smile”. The students will answer the question, “Why is she smiling?” while using the writing skills they have been working on this year.

As you can tell, third grade is a challenging, busy, fun place to be!
