Kindergarten Article

Not only is May the shortest month to spell, it feels like the shortest month!  Between the quickening of pulses that the warmer weather brings, the plethora of events, and the ‘tying together’ of all the loose ends from the school year, this month will fly by:  guaranteed!

Among the highlights, is next week’s book fair, during which our class will visit the display, but ask that you (or another family member) help your child with the actual purchase, at pick-up time or during Grandparent / Special Person’s Day.  That occurs on Friday, May 9, and is a wonderful event during which your Kindergartner gets to share his/ her school with someone important in his / her life, including a luncheon.  We appreciate knowing ahead of time if your child will not have a visitor, so that we can ensure that we have time to make plans so that s/he does not feel left out.  Children without guests must be picked up at the regular Friday dismissal time of noon, unless plans get made with Extended Day.  This is a concert dress day for the whole school.

The following week is when the Spring Concert takes place.  Kindergarten children are invited to stay to perform on Thursday afternoon (the 15th at 2:30), and they will perform again for the whole school on the morning of the 16th.  Again, concert dress is required.

That week our tile muralist Rob Roessel will return to install the tiles we made earlier in the year.

Tuesday, May 20 is Step Up Day.  All K-5 children moving up a grade will make a group visit to the next grade that day, and next year’s Kindergartners are invited to visit in Kindergarten during that time.  This is a nice way to ease the butterflies and have a preview of what is yet to come!

Monday, May 26 is Memorial Day, and there is no school.

Tuesday, June 3rd is our last Buddy Day.  We celebrate this by having a Teddy Bear Picnic at lunchtime with our Fifth Grade buddies.  Thursday, June 5th is the last day for Extended Day.

Friday, the 6th is our last day of school (K-2).  In past years Kindergarten has presented a concert that day to wrap the year up, but because we now take part in the Spring Concert, we have decided to discontinue this tradition.

Any children whose birthdays fall during the summer are invited to schedule an ‘un-birthday’ celebration during May.  If any of you are longing for the chance to come in to class to share a book, project, or activity you are also hereby invited to converse with us about the possibility of fitting it into our schedule.

In and among these dated activities, we will be tying up the loose ends, growing, assessing, looking back, losing teeth, saying some fond farewells, and celebrating how far we have come!  We have enjoyed watching the growth (cognitive, socio-emotional, and physical) that has gone on this year, and are thrilled with the positive changes each child has made.  Regardless of your plans for next year, we hope that all of you will continue to find your way to the portals of Kindergarten, where it all gets set into motion!  Thank you all for a terrific year; we wish you all a wonderful summer!
