May has arrived and the school year is nearing the end. However, we still have so much to do in first grade. Our last visit to Head Start was Monday, April 28th. Our children have been role models sharing the joy of reading to the Head Start preschoolers. Instilling a love of reading in others is a wonderful gift to give, which is just what first grade has provided for the three and four year olds at Head Start. We thank all of you who have joined us throughout the year with this community service project!
It is always amazing to think back to the beginning of the school year when most of these first graders were just learning to read and write. Now, they are confident readers and writers and enjoy sharing their talents with others. Our literacy centers will continue to provide reinforcement activities for reading and writing.
In math, we will be working on addition and subtraction facts, as well as, adding and subtracting double-digit numbers with regrouping. Don’t forget to let your child use the website provided by our math program, which can be found at www.scottforesman.com. These computer games can help to reinforce your child’s math skills at home. Reading math stories also helps reinforce concepts. Look for these titles in your local library: “Mission: Addition”, by Loreen Leedy, “Two of Everything: A Chinese Folktale”, by Lily t. Hong, and “Shark Swimathon”, by Stuart J. Murphy.
In Social Studies, Time For Kids magazines will focus our attention on the farm-to-school movement spreading across America. Students will become knowledgeable about this movement that connects local farmers with nearby schools. We will discuss how the partnership between farmers and schools help farmers and how it helps kids.
At the beginning of the year, we went on a field trip to the Fitchburg Public Library and each child received his/her own library card. We hope that you will take advantage of visiting the library regularly throughout the summer in order to help your child continue to strengthen his/her reading skills.
