A talented faculty is a school’s greatest resource and the single best way to assure academic excellence, provide role models, and keep alive a child’s innate desire to learn and succeed. It is the energy, professional training, and care that Applewild’s faculty brings to their teaching which sustain our academic program and enables our students to be successful.
Passion and compassion are the hallmarks of our program. An Applewild teacher’s role goes beyond the classroom. A teacher may coach soccer or teach model making. He or she may be a student’s advisor or a leader on a backpacking trip. The multiple roles teachers play allow them to learn more about their students as individuals and develop meaningful relationships. Family style dining allows students and faculty an opportunity to connect daily and exchange ideas in an informal way that sustains and reinforces the sense of community expected by all our students.
Applewild has attracted and retained highly qualified individuals in their fields. They return year after year because they find the rewards of working with active, curious, and able young people compelling. Applewild is committed to knowing each student well. We accomplish this through low teacher-student ratios. This is particularly true in the younger grades, with beginning readers and as children are learning computation. We divide our sections into smaller groups by adding reading and mathematics teachers to the homeroom teachers. We also have a Learning Specialist on staff to help identify students – at any level – who would benefit either from acceleration or additional support.
In the classroom, on the playing fields, and in the community, our teachers serve as role models. Our students learn not only from what they say, but also from what they do. Our teachers are mentors in the broadest sense of the word.
